The Tiji Festival, occurring in the first or second week of May, is a three-day ritual in Mustang, Nepal. Based on the Tiji myth, it narrates the epic battle of deity Dorje Jono against his demon father to save Mustang from destruction. The demon caused water scarcity, famine, and disasters. Tiji symbolizes hope, spring renewal, and the triumph of Buddha Dharma. It coincides with the shift from the dry season to the monsoon, vital for Mustang’s harvest. Nestled on the Tibetan border, Upper Mustang preserves undisturbed Tibetan culture with monasteries clinging to cliffs. The trek starts in Kagbeni, a medieval town surrounded by apple orchards, offering a unique blend of tradition against the backdrop of the starkly beautiful, windy, arid Tibetan plateau. Mustang stands as one of the last bastions of pristine Tibetan culture globally.
