Mustang, situated in Nepal, is a breathtaking destination divided into two areas: Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. Lower Mustang offers a preview of stunning landscapes, the beauty of the Kali Gandaki Gorge, and the renowned Muktinath Temple. On the other hand, Upper Mustang, often called “The Forbidden Kingdom,” provides views of picturesque villages, the Manaslu Himal range, Jomsom, and Lo Manthang (the home of the last king of Mustang).
Mustang is renowned for trekking and immersing oneself in Tibetan culture. Despite its enchanting beauty and cultural richness, Mustang remains a mystery waiting to be unraveled due to high restrictions on entry to Upper Mustang. The region boasts a unique culture distinct from other parts of the nation, making it an ideal place to learn and discover something new about both the area and its people.

Day 02: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation
After having breakfast today, we will embark on a guided tour to explore several of Kathmandu’s most historical and spiritual landmarks. Among these are the World Heritage Sites: the historic Durbar Square, the revered Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, the renowned Monkey Temple (Swayambhunath), and the Buddhist shrine (Buddha Nath), known as one of the largest Stupas globally. In the afternoon, a pre-trip discussion will be held, allowing us to meet our trek leader and fellow team members. During this session, you will receive a briefing about the upcoming trek and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about our upcoming adventure.
Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara [823m/2,700ft]: 6 hrs drive
In the early morning, around 7 am, we commence our journey to Pokhara aboard a tourist bus. Along the way, the scenic route showcases the picturesque countryside of Nepal, featuring lush greenery, flowing rivers, quaint villages, fertile farms, and breathtaking mountain vistas. By the afternoon, we arrive in Pokhara, a city renowned for its stunning views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, the Annapurna range, and more. Pokhara, often referred to as the city of lakes, boasts several beautiful lakes, with Fewa Lake being the most accessible and charming. In the afternoon, take the opportunity to explore Fewa Lake, indulge in boating, and unwind in the serene surroundings. Enjoy an evening of exploration, relaxation, and dining by the tranquil shores of Lake Fewa, with the option of engaging in some shopping during the later hours. Rest overnight in Pokhara.
Day 04: Fly to Jomsom & trek to Kagbeni [2,858m/9,375ft]: 3-4 hrs
Following an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for a morning flight to Jomsom. This 20-minute scenic flight provides breathtaking views of majestic 8,000-meter peaks like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang, serves as a significant town and a key village along the Kaligandaki area, connecting the ancient Trans-Himalayan Salt Trade route to Tibet.
Jomsom experiences strong winds in the afternoon. Proceed along the gradual path on the Kali Gandaki riverbed for approximately 3 hours, eventually arriving at the village of Ekley-bhatti. After a well-deserved break, an hour of easy walking leads to Kagbeni, situated at the confluence of two rivers. Kagbeni is a fascinating, windswept village positioned on the historic Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via the Upper Mustang area. Here, the Kak Khola, a significant tributary from Muktinath, joins the Mustang Khola, forming the Kali Gandaki River.
Day 05: Kagbeni to chele [3050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs
Our journey commences with a special permit check, leading us to the riverbank of Kaligandaki upstream. Along the way, we traverse scenic and picturesque places, navigating sandy and windy trails with varying elevations. The trail encompasses both uphill and downhill sections. Our first destination is Tangbe village, characterized by narrow alleys winding through white-washed houses, surrounded by fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat, and apple orchards. Continuing onwards, we trek to Chhusang and, after crossing the river, ascend to a massive red conglomerate chunk that has fallen from the cliff above, creating a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki flows. Progressing along small ridges, we eventually reach Chele village.
Day 06: Chele to Syanbochen [3475m/11,398ft]: 6-7 hrs
Continuing our trek today, we proceed towards Eklo Bhatti. The journey involves ascending to the Taklam La Pass (3,624m/11,923 ft) through plateaus and narrow stretches, offering panoramic views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang, and Damodar Danda. After reaching the pass, we descend a bit to the village of Samar. The trail leads us above Samar village to a ridge, followed by a steep descent to a stream. Another three hours of a similar walk brings us to Syanbochen. Along the way, we take breaks by cool streams and among juniper trees. The locals use dried juniper leaves as incense for inviting deities and initiating any auspicious activities. During the journey, we also pass by a cave renowned as the Ramchung Cave.
Day 07: Syanbochen to Ghaymi [3520m/11,546ft]: 5-6 hrs
Following breakfast, we embark on an uphill trek to Yamda La (3,850m /12,667ft), passing by several teahouses, chortens, and local villages characterized by Tibetan-style houses with open verandas. Our route includes the crossing of mountain passes, an avenue adorned with poplar trees, and fields of barley. The ascent to Nyi Pass (4,010m/13,193ft) may be a bit more challenging. After reaching the pass, we descend to our overnight resting place in Ghaymi. As the third-largest village in the Lo region, Ghayami is surrounded by extensive fields, the majority of which appear barren.
Day 08: Ghaymi to Charang [3500m/11,480ft]: 4-5 hrs
We commence the trek post-breakfast with an enjoyable stroll. After crossing Ghaymi Khola, the trail ascends to a plateau and traverses alongside an extensive Mani wall—a sacred stone wall constructed by Buddhism followers. Beyond the end of the wall, the trail turns eastward towards the village of Charang. The path takes us through a labyrinth of fields, willow trees, and houses separated by stone walls at the summit of the Tsarang Chu canyon. Here, we encounter a vast white dzong and a red Gompa, leading us to our teahouse for tonight’s stay.
Day 09: Charang to Lo-Mangthang (3700m/12,136ft): 5-6 hrs
Today’s trek takes us to Lo-Mangthang, offering breathtaking views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I, and Bhrikuti peak. The trail initially descends to the Charang Chu Canyon and then ascends steeply after crossing the river. Continuing further, the trail gently ascends to the windy pass of Lo at 3,850m, providing a panoramic view of the Lo-Mangthang Valley. As we descend towards Lo-Mangthang, the walled city reveals its magnificent appearance, nestled amidst hills near the Tibetan border. Our overnight stay is arranged at a hotel in Lo-Mangthang.
Day 10: Explore Lo-Mangthang
Today, we embark on an exploration of the surrounding areas, starting with a visit to Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. Namgyal Gompa, situated on a hilltop, holds significance as both an important monastery for the local community and a local court. After exploring Namgyal Gompa, the journey continues to Tingkhar, the last major village to the northwest of Lo-Mangthang, and then we stroll back to the hotel.
Alternatively, there is an option to visit other attractions such as the Tall Champa Lakhang, known as the “God house,” the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa, and the Entrance Hall, which are key highlights of the town. Another captivating feature is the four-story building of the Rajas palace, offering splendid panoramic views of the Himalayas and the surrounding area.
Day 11: Lo-Mangthang to Drakmar [3810 m/12,500ft]: 6-7 hrs
On the return journey from Lo-Mangthan, we opt for a different route than the one we took initially. The trek leads us to Drakmar via Gyakar, where we encounter the Ghar Gompa, a monastery that is over 1200 years old, with Guru Rinpoche as the primary figure. This Gompa is renowned for its rock paintings. Legend has it that making a wish at the Ghar Gompa results in the fulfillment of that wish. We take the opportunity to explore the local area, bearing in mind the likelihood of dusty winds, so it is advisable to undertake the walk in the morning.
Day 12: Dhakmar to Ghiling [3806m/12,484ft]: 5-6 hrs
Today, we return to Ghiling for our overnight stay, completing a long walk that takes approximately 5-6 hours. Upon arrival and after lunch, take the opportunity to explore the area. However, be mindful of the dusty winds that typically occur in the afternoon, making it more pleasant to walk in the evening.
Day 13: Ghiling to Chhuksang [3050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs
We retrace our steps back to Ghiling for the overnight stop after a 5-hour walk. The journey offers wonderful scenery with stunning Himalayan views. Enjoy the trip and spend the night at the teahouse.
Day 14: Chhuksang to Jomsom [2700/8,856ft]: 6-7 hrs
Our final day is anticipated to be a long one, so it’s advisable to start the trek early. We make our way to Kagbeni, completing the upper Mustang trails and merging with the regular Annapurna Circuit trek. After lunch in Kagbeni, we continue on to Jomsom for the overnight stop. Alternatively, if you have an extra day to spare, our guide can take you to Muktinath as well.
Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara
After enjoying breakfast in the morning, we check in at the airport for our flight back to Pokhara. The 30-minute flight offers a dramatic journey between the gorges of the two massive mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Upon arrival at Pokhara airport, our guide will transfer you to a hotel by the lakeside. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the lake, and you will spend the night at the hotel.
Day 16: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu
Following breakfast, we begin our 200-kilometer drive back to Kathmandu. It’s recommended to sit on the left side of the vehicle to fully appreciate the scenic views along the route. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for personal activities such as exchanging emails with travel companions and organizing photos. You can spend the evening at your leisure, perhaps engaging in some last-minute shopping and enjoying a dinner celebration with our trekking staff. The night will be spent in Kathmandu.
Day 17: Fly Home: Farewell Friend
As your journey in Nepal comes to an end today, you bid farewell to the mountains. We sincerely hope you enjoyed the tour with us and are confident that you’ll be back for another adventure in the Himalayas. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight, our representative will transfer you to the airport. During your journey home, you’ll have plenty of time to reflect on your experiences and plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal. Safe travels!
