Helambu Trekking

9 Days

The Helambu trek offers a perfect short getaway near the Kathmandu Valley, showcasing the unspoiled beauty of the Helambu region. Despite its proximity to Kathmandu, Helambu retains its pristine charm. The trek features the rich Hyolmo culture, dense rhododendron and bamboo forests, captivating waterfalls, and breathtaking views of snow-capped Himalayas, making it one of the most diverse and rewarding treks close to Kathmandu. The region’s stunning Himalayan scenery bordering Tibet and the presence of monasteries enhance the enthralling experience.

Commencing from Sundarijal, just an hour’s drive from Kathmandu, the Helambu Trek enters Shivapuri National Park. The trail leads through Chisopani, Kutumsang, Thadepati, and Sermathang, concluding at Melamchi Pul Bazar in the Helambu region. The journey traverses thick mountain forests with spectacular Himalayan vistas, and towards the end, trekkers encounter beautiful rice terraces and visit splendid Buddhist monasteries. The Helambu Trek provides a delightful blend of cultural richness and natural beauty in the highlands of the Langtang region, where the inhabitants, with Tibetan origins, still resemble Tibetans.

The day starts with a one-hour drive to Sundarijal (1350m), which serves as the starting point for our trek. From Sundarijal, we embark on our trek to Chisopani (2300m). The initial part of the trek takes us past a small hydroelectric plant before entering the Shivapuri National Park. The trail leads to the first settlement of Mulkharka, primarily inhabited by the Tamang people. Continuing along the ridge, we traverse a forest of oaks and rhododendrons until we reach Chisopani. The trek provides glimpses of the local culture and the natural beauty of the Shivapuri National Park.

Day 04: Trek from Chisopani to Kutumsang (2446m/8022ft): 7 hours

Following breakfast, our trek continues towards Kutumsang. The day’s journey commences with a descent, passing through meadows and fields while enjoying breathtaking views of the Langtang mountains. The trail leads to Pathi Bhanjyang and Gul Bhanjyang before climbing the ridge to reach another pass. Descending from this pass, we eventually arrive at the village of Kutumsang. The trek offers diverse landscapes and mountain vistas throughout the day.

Day 05: Trek from Kutumsang to Thadepati (3650m/11972ft): 6 hours

Ascending above Kutumsang, our trail takes us along a steep path through fir and rhododendron forests, characterized by the absence of permanent settlements. The trek proceeds to Yurin Danda, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas. Our journey concludes for the day at Tharepati, where we settle in for the night. Tharepati provides a serene environment and the chance to relish the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

Day 06: Trek to Tarkeghyang (2560m/8397ft): 6 hours

Our journey continues as we set forth for Tarkeghyang. In the initial segment, the trail descends until we cross the Melamchi Khola. Subsequently, we ascend towards Tarkeghyang, traversing through Sherpa settlements. Delight in the mesmerizing sight of Himalayan peaks, glistening in the sunlight. Upon reaching Tarkeghyang, explore the village and its ancient monastery, which stands as one of the oldest and largest in the region. This village, predominantly inhabited by the Helmu caste, is commonly referred to as Helambu.

Day 07: Trek to Sermathang (2,610m/8,563ft): 3/4 hr

Today’s trek is relatively easier as we do not gain much altitude. The trail takes us through forests, along streams, and past waterfalls. It sweeps around the wide valley, reaching between Parachin and the Sherpa village of Gangyul. As we proceed from Gangyul, we eventually reach Sermathang. Take the opportunity to explore the village, and don’t miss the Buddhist monastery located at the highest point of the village.

Day 08: Trek to Malemchi Puul Bazaar: Drive to Kathmandu: 3/4 hrs trek/ 2 hr drive

On the last day of our trek, we descend to Malemchi Pul Bazaar. This village is primarily inhabited by the Sherpa community, but it also has residents from other ethnic backgrounds. From the bazaar, we take a bus back to Kathmandu. Upon our return to Kathmandu, the rest of the day is free, providing an opportunity for rest or souvenir shopping. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, a farewell dinner is arranged at The Ship Restaurant Bar & Lounge. The restaurant offers a carefully crafted menu with a wide range of choices. We spend the night in Kathmandu.
