Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak globally, graces Eastern Nepal, straddling the Nepal-Sikkim border. Comprising a colossal mountain mass with satellite peaks, this Himalayan giant features four summits: Main, Middle, South, and Yalung Kang. In 1955, a British Expedition team marked the first successful summit. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project, managed by the World Wildlife Fund and Nepal Government, safeguards the region, home to diverse species like the Red Panda.
Three peaks—Main, Central, and South—rest on the Nepal-Sikkim border, while the other two are within Nepal’s Taplejung District. Yalung Kang, the west summit, at 8,420 meters, is considered a distinct peak by some mountaineers. The North Face ascent is deemed safest. Expeditions typically kick off from the base camp, nestled in panoramic meadows at 5,180 meters. India contributes to preservation through the Kanchenjunga National Park initiative, ensuring the protection of this majestic mountain’s natural wonders.
